Introducing - the Ledger Budgeting App

Introducing - the Ledger Budgeting App

I started tinkering with creating a simple budgeting and net worth program a few months ago. Ledger is the result of this tinkering. I am not 100% sold on the name but this is what I am going with right now until I come up with something better.

The app is meant to be simple and have simple features forcing you to manually enter data so you see where your money are going. Some key features:

  • Free. Yes, this is a simple, free app. There is no up-front cost, there is no monthly subscription. This budgeting tool is completely free with no strings attached. There are also no ads!
  • No internet access needed. This is an offline app that lives on your computer. It does not push anything to the cloud or need to connect to any online service.
  • Security and privacy. Your budget, accounts, net worth, data, are all stored on your local drive and are not shared with any cloud service.
  • Open data. Although the app is not open source, it saves data in .csv files which are easy to read and modify with any spreadsheet application. If you want to tinker with Excel and then re-import the data into Ledger, you can do that.

And here is what it can do for you:

  • Create a budget with custom categories personalized to suit your needs.
  • Add and remove asset and debt accounts to keep track of your money.
  • Net worth calculator. Quickly and easily see your net worth based on your accounts.
  • Warnings when you exceed a budget.
  • Simple dashboard that shows all data at a quick glance.

I am still working on the app, but I now have a version 1.0 that anyone can download and try for themselves. I only have a Windows version but I am working on a Mac one as well.

Click here, or the button below, to download the executable. Since this is an indie development, you might get a warning from Windows. Run as administrator to open it the first time. I recommend running it from your local drive.

For feedback, e-mail me at optimizedforfreedom@gmail.com. I am still working on other features but would love to hear back from users.
